The main functions of electrical insulating oils are heat dissipation and reliable insulation of energised parts of electrical installations. During the normal operation, moisture and other impurities penetrate into insulating oils, leading to a deterioration of their dielectric properties. This in turn may result in catastrophic failures of critical electrical equipment.
To ensure the quality of insulating oils, specialised systems are used for testing various oil properties during certification, acceptance, and maintenance – measuring the breakdown voltage and dielectric dissipation factor of transformer, capacitor, cable, and other insulating oils.
